And not all the fools are dead yet

Trip planner for MN-ND-MT-WY-SD-MN trip, mid-June 2009. (The title is from Oliver Scott's incomparable "Birder's Guide to Wyoming".) Although in principle this was a Prairie Pothole trip, it became obvious that I could wedge both Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons into a longer loop trip. Since I've been to neither of these places and have a natural affinity for western montane environments I added them at the expense of dragging the trip out to two weeks in length. The other thing is that I have only one prairie life bird of any significance (Baird's Sparrow), one introduced agricultural one (Gray Partridge) and the rest are montane or boreal birds (Ruffed Grouse, Blue Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker). In the schedule Minnesota is given fairly short shrift, and is really on there because flying into Minneapolis is more practical (non-stop from PHL) than other options.

Prior Trip Reports

The Europeans and the prolific Stuart Healey (ex-pat Brit) are pretty much holding down the fort on trip reports, which are otherwise thin on the ground.

Zen & Art of Motorcycle Maintenance Route Maps

Z&AMM remains one of the more pivotal reads during my life, and it hadn't escaped me that my own route from MN into MT possibly overlapped some parts of the route taken by motorcycle in the book. So, for curiosity's sake, the few route links are given below. As the actual route was taken in the 1960's, much if not everything has changed although I have earmarked one rest area south of the Shawnee NG in the southern ND plains that I may visit.

Books

I used the following books for trip planning, but limited myself to bringing only the MN and WY guides and making scans/photocopies of small parts of the other one to keep the weight and bulk down.

Distances

Sunrise, Sunset

All times for June 15th. MDT is sw.ND, w.SD (Rapid City), MT, WY. CDT is MN, e.SD, most of ND (Minot, Bismarck).

Directions to Various Sites

ND and SD in particular are not covered by any guide books currently available (there is a very old 1979 birding guide by Zimmer, but a lot changes in 30 years and it is very much out of print). MN, MT and WY are covered by the birding guides and are in general not repeated here.

Wyoming additions

  • SR 450, 20 miles west of Newcastle at far east of state near Black Hills, probably somewhat unreliable
  • "Lynch Road" that runs generally southwest starting from SR 450 about 7.5 miles east of the SR 116 intersection in Weston County. However, there's much zigging and zagging through two counties before this road eventually hooks up with SR 59 near the "town" of Bill, some 35 miles north of Douglas.
  • Forest roads 872 and 876 that run west from the Moskee Road (east of Sundance) to Hwy 585 (the road from Sundance to Newcastle). It's a very pleasant 7 miles drive through pines, meadows and a little bit of riparian habitat. The "Moskee Road and Bluebird Trail" route is described on page 122 of the Birder's Guide to Wyoming. For those who might try this route, note that the starting point (7.5 miles south of I-90 exit 191 on the Moskee Road) is no longer marked with a #872 sign. It's now marked Reynolds Road (this is FR 872). The right angle turn after 1.8 miles is now marked Clark Road (this is FR 876).
  • North into the Bear Lodge Mountains about 11 miles on FR 838 (to the crossroads a few miles past Warren Peak). From here took FR 847 west down the mountain for 17 miles to State Route 24 near Devils Tower. I've mentioned FR 838 before on June 19 and on June 16, 2005. FR 847 was a new road for me and it turned out to be very enjoyable birding without producing anything special. As the road drops, the canyon widens and riparian habitat increases. The lower section is very wide with ranchland, ponds and rocky bluffs. This is a good alternate route from Sundance to Devils Tower without the traffic
  • Warren Peak in the Bear Lodge Mountains, about 11 miles from Sundance. RED CROSSBILLS were calling as I left the motel. While not very high at 6500+ feet, Warren Peak Lookout is 2000 feet above Sundance and offers some very nice views. Birds along the highway (FR 838) included VESPER SPARROW and BULLOCK'S ORIOLE in the lower meadows, COMMON NIGHTHAWK in the pines; RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and WARBLING VIREO in mixed pine-aspen habitat; and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS in the lower meadows © Phil Jeffrey 2009 - this version STRICTLY for personal use only by myself (and D. Speiser).
